Machine Cover Size Calculator

Suppliers quote custom covers on the flat panel size, not on the machine footprint. Enter your machine dimensions to get the panel size, fabric area and estimated weight — then copy the result straight into your enquiry.

How the number is calculated

Everything on this page is arithmetic you can check by hand. A cover is cut as a top panel plus a skirt strip, not as one draped sheet — a single draped sheet counts the four corners twice and overstates fabric by roughly 40%.

drop      = H + hem allowance
top area  = (L/1000) x (W/1000)
skirt     = 2 x ((L+W)/1000) x (drop/1000)
net area = top area + skirt (equals the 5-face box area at drop height)
gross     = net area x (1 + loss)
weight    = gross x gsm / 1000
cut sizes : top panel L+2*seam by W+2*seam
            skirt strip height drop+seam, total length 2*(L+W)+4*seam

Self-check: with L 2400, W 1400, H 1200, hem 100, loss 10% and 220 gsm, the result is 3.36 + 9.88 = 13.24 m² net, 14.56 m² gross, 3.20 kg per piece. The net figure equals the surface area of the box measured at drop height, which is how you know nothing is counted twice.

Questions

Why do suppliers quote on flat panel size instead of machine size?

Cutting is laid out on flat panels, and price follows fabric consumption. Machine dimensions are only the starting point; allowances and seams decide the actual material.

How much allowance should I add?

The defaults here are a 100 mm hem allowance plus 25 mm seam per edge. Add more if the cover has to clear a base frame or carry tie-down straps. There is no single standard value because it depends on the closure and the way the cover is tensioned.

What if my machine is wider than the fabric roll?

The cover needs a vertical join. The calculator shows whether a join is required at your roll width. Joins affect water resistance and seam strength, so state them when you request a quote.

Does fabric choice change the size?

No. Fabric choice changes weight, stiffness and the detail design of hems and closures, not the panel size for a given machine.
